C4 opens its doors for an open dialogue on recovery

Chicago, IL – One in 12 Americans have a problem with alcohol or other drugs, yet many cannot afford quality care. To address this, Community Counseling Centers of Chicago (C4) will host an Open House on Thursday, September 22, 2005 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at 4007 North Broadway as part of a national initiative supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The 16th annual observance of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month (Recovery Month) celebrates individuals in recovery from substance abuse disorders – and their families – and publicizes the need for better access to treatment and recovery support services.

Recovery Month is part of a national effort to change attitudes and reduce stigma around substance abuse disorders. “Our community must take action to ensure that people who need treatment will have access to necessary treatment, while still being able to keep their jobs and contribute to our community,” says Bruce Seitzer, Associate Director of C4. Recovery Month is an opportunity for our community to begin a dialogue on changing the way we address treatment issues for those dealing with these problems which can have devastating consequences.”

Recovery Point, C4’s outpatient substance abuse treatment program is designed to help individuals, couples and families achieve and then maintain drug-free and healthy lifestyles. Special services are also designed to meet the needs of the dually diagnosed (substance abuse and mental illness), those involved with the criminal justice system, federally mandated priority populations including women with dependent children, Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) referrals, HIV infected clients and intravenous drug users. During FY 2004, more than 1,100 individuals were served at Recovery Point.

C4, which currently operates eight facilities, was established in 1972 as a grassroots response to a federal policy that left communities the task of developing services for people who were released from psychiatric hospitals into neighborhoods that were ill-equipped to provide for their needs. Since its inception, C4 has provided a full range of outpatient behavioral health services for adults, children and families in the community who are struggling with mental illness, substance addiction, emotional trauma and the aftermath of violence.

Services include 24-hour crisis response and emergency assessment, short-term counseling, intensive psychotherapy and support groups, psychiatric and medication evaluations, medication clinics and education on medication monitoring, substance abuse treatment services, vocational services, parenting skills classes, case management and linkage to community resources, psychosocial rehabilitation services, a variety of therapy modes, including art and expressive therapy, representative payee and financial management services as well as services for survivors of sexual violence.

Last year, C4 served 7,000 unduplicated consumers.
