Illinois Cuts in Mental Health Services Will Cost More in Long Run

Deep cuts in mental health services will not only cause more human suffering, but will end up costing the state more in the long run.

In an interview with the well-respected Chronicle of Philanthropy, C4 Chief Administrative Officer John Troy said the state's decision to eliminate a $100,000 grant to provide support services to transition people with mental illness from hospitals and nursing homes back into the community would be a fiscal disaster.

"It's going to make it tough for people to come out," said Troy. "It will cost the state five times what they would pay us, by having people stay in institutions."
