Sandra's Story

“I came to a parenting class thinking I really didn’t need it. I came in order that my partner would come as well, because he really needed this information, not me. So imagine my surprise when I realized that this class was apparently developed for me personally. The only thing missing was for the sentences in the handbook to specifically begin with “Sandra yells at her kids to go to sleep. This method is not effective because…”

All joking aside, this class has been indispensable to me in so many ways. Keeping in mind that one parenting class is not sufficient to undo years of bad parenting, this class has helped me become more conscious of my own behaviors. It has helped me to breathe and not feel compelled to immediately react. (Usually in an inappropriate manner) It has helped me see my children as people; persons with the same capacity for fear, and need for appreciation. It has helped me view them as equals in the sense of being human and requiring the same emotional support.

This class has helped me put myself in their shoes. I use this scenario to put it in perspective: If I was an employee at a new job, how would I feel if my boss screamed, yelled, berated, and/or threatened me? That’s how I see it now. My kids are not in same category of “things to do.” They are now individuals that require more than just having their physical needs met. They have become visible to me as whole, complete, persons. I cannot articulate or describe the depths of my gratitude.“
